The second course had applicants from 7 countries including Rwanda (6), Ethiopia (1), Botswana (2) and Southern Sudan (1), Tanzania (4), Kenya (3) and Uganda (20). Although we initially aimed at reaching 18 scientists in year 2, we admitted 33 (81%) participants out of 41 total applicants due to the competitive nature of the applicants reflecting the high demand of the course. Fourteen applicants (14, 34%) were female. Only 29 of those who were admitted (33) started the course and were from 17 universities or research institutes. These institutions were:

    • Makerere University College of Health Sciences, Kampala, Uganda (7, 2 female)
    • Gulu University, Gulu, Uganda (2, 1 female)
    • Uganda Management Institute/AIDS Information Centre, Kampala, Uganda (1)
    • Joint Clinical Research Centre, Kampala, Uganda (1, female)
    • Uganda Virus Research Institute/International Vaccine Research Initiative, Entebbe, Uganda (1)
    • African Palliative Care Association, Kampala, Uganda (1, female).
    • Rakai Health Sciences Programme, Rakai, Uganda (1)
    • University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana (2)
    • National University of Rwanda, Kigali, Rwanda (4, 2 female).
    • Medecins Sans Frontieres, Juba, Southern Sudan (1)
    • Kenya Medical Research Institute, Nairobi, Kenya (2, 1 female)
    • University of Dodoma, Dodoma, Tanzania (1, female)
    • Ministry of Health and Social Work, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (1, female)
    • Ifakara Health Institute, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania (1)
    • Private Health Sector Programme/USAID, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (1)
    • University of Liverpool, UK (Student) (1, female).
    • University of Sienna, Italy (Student) (1, female).

In this second cohort, thirty (30, 91%) participants completed the self–driven introductory learning and face–to–face sessions. One participant from Kenya (KEMRI-Kilifi) did not present for the Kampala workshop and thus only 29 were available for the face-to-face training in Kampala. Eleven (12, 41%) of these 29 were female scientists.
